A 13-year-old boy has died after falling from a shade sail at a primary school at Hastings, south-east of Melbourne overnight.

Police say the teen was on the sail with a group of friends when it gave way, at Hastings Westpark Primary School, just before 8:00pm (AEDT).

He died at the scene.

Another boy has been flown to hospital in Melbourne in a serious condition with head injuries.

A third boy received minor injuries.

The boys had been celebrating winning a cricket grand final when the shade sail gave way.

Ambulance officers initially had trouble reaching the injured children, because the school was locked.

Paramedic David Llewelyn says one of the 13-year-old's friends tried to revive him.

"His dad arrived, continued CPR while the ambulance was called, and other parents came with bolt cutters to try and get access," he said.

"It was just quite pandemonium."

He says other children were taken home after the accident, but reported injuries hours later.

"About three hours later the ambulance received another three reports of different addresses where children now presented with injuries, so we had ambulances transport four more boys to Frankston hospital for further treatment," he said.

Shock

The families of a number of boys involved in the fatal fall are still coming to grips with what happened.

Greg Bradshaw says his 15-year-old son went to play basketball at the school with his friends after celebrating winning a cricket grand final.

He says his son remains in hospital with head injuries.

"He's got a fractured skull, but he's coherent this morning, so he should be okay," he said.

"I spoke to one of the parents this morning, and they're all pretty distraught. All the boys ended up in hospital last night in shock."
